My brother-in-law (if I was married) and his fiancée are getting married in the fall. Both families threw showers for the bride to be, so I made up some mostly non traditional gifts for them.
Gift registries are great but I like to give people something unexpected and useful. for the first shower, I decided on retro kitsch. I put together a basket of housewifey goodies and made a sheer hostess apron.
I also embroidered a simple design on a purchased tea towel with their initials. The running joke at both showers was the number of tea towels she received. They will never need to buy them again!
For the 2nd shower, I hade a bit more time to execute my original plan of a picnic basket and a homemade blanket to go with it. It’s an experience, and most of the gift is consumable so it can be enjoyed without adding more ‘stuff’ to their lives.
Since the blanket is meant to be an outdoor use item, the batting is polyester and the design fairly simple, with a whimsical touch added to the corners in the form of thrifted doilies. The couple’s name and wedding year are embroidered subtly on one corner.
These went to their recipients in May, which seems like a long time ago. Now I’m on to more green things and a wedding dress for a friend!
