I recently made some silent auction prizes in support of a local theatre company. The theme was Shakespeare Star Wars, so I trolled the internet for some subversively nerdy ideas.
The first item is based on an image others have used to make home decor, but I gave it my own twist by using felt appliqué and embroidery for that antique feel. I like it’s subtlety – the reference is only apparent upon closer inspection by people in the know.
I printed out the silhouettes and cut them out to use as a pattern, then traced them onto black felt and cut them out. I used an exacto knife to remove the tiny piece between Leia’s hair and neck. Each one was then hand stitched to the backing fabric with embroidery floss. Lettering is hand embroidered.
Silhouette template from here.
I had a plain black wooden frame, but I decided to add a silver edge for interest/extremely subtle space tie-in.
I also (as you may know) love a useful gift, so the other item is a cross-stitched tea towel featuring the (destroyed) Death Star. Initially based on this free pattern, I decided it needed to be a little larger, so expanded it.
These were nice ‘smaller’ projects to whip up for a good cause. I’m glad they went home with someone who really wanted them!
Back to larger schemes!
