Whilst I juggle several projects for clients and sadly neglect the made for me items, here are some fun things I’ve picked up recently…
The Sawa 2000 De Luxe. There seem to be a lot of these around, and yet little info is available on who made it or when. Judging from the packaging it appears to be c. 1960s or 1970s. This crazy looking contraption is a cookie press (or apparently for piping mashed potatoes if you prefer) and came with all of it’s attachments. I have another vintage cookie press but it’s a twist knob at the top which requires quite the expert hand to get the right amount of dough out. The Sawa 2000 has a ratcheting action that looks like it might be a little more precise.
This pink ceramic telephone looks like it once held a note pad and pen, but I couldn’t find any actual record of what they looked like online. It seems to be another ‘GiftCraft’ item – we have a matching piggy bank of a pink elephant sitting on a toilet (?) that has the exact same glaze. It’s fairly useless but it was just so kitschy (and also there was a sale) I had to pick it up.
We finally got around to some garage sales this season and scored this 1970s waffle maker. It came with the instructions and has reversible ‘irons’ so you can grill sandwiches or even open it up flat and use it as a griddle.
This small metal piece made me squeal with joy because its something I thought I might have to have one made for me.
I found this slightly worn but incomplete chip and dip a while ago. Luckily, I knew that the hardware was pretty universal, and now I have a complete set!
This lovely coloured ‘Twin Turntable” I thought might come in handy. I think the idea was to have them inside the cupboard, but I’ve found it handy to use as a coffee/tea station, especially for dinner parties as you can put all of the cups on the bottom and the accoutrements on top to save space on the side board or table.
A recent trip through rural Manitoba scored some great vintage housewares. Another matching (in the box) ‘Gourmates’ Chromeware dish that matches the set I got last year, a worn 1950s home-ec cookbook, fondue forks, jello molds, a pour over coffee contraption, sugar spoons and wall mount knobs that look like old fashioned water taps.
Skirts – one older and handmade, one summery retro rayon that needed a little alteration.
Fabric – Various. Being the thrifty gal that I am, I picked up a number of fabric pieces and vintage sheeting to use as fabric. Sadly my work projects have put my summer wardrobe plans on hold, but someday I hope to make some lovely skirts, tops and frocks with these.
Patterns: Another thing I love to get at garage sales and thrift shops!
The Art of Sewing: Time Life books that each have a different fabric cover! I love the orange corduroy one… Now I need more shelving in my sewing room to hold my growing collection of books!
Hoping to get out and about more this summer when I can to find more treasures!
