Everyone Loves a Theme: The Tent Dress

For many months now there has been a post lingering in the drafts about some of the themed ensembles I’ve made myself for various events. For several reasons, it may never come to light on the blog, so I’ve decided to break it down by doing individual posts so at least some of them can be presented.

The first one I’m posting is from a series of dinner parties a friend hosted with themes for each evening provided by guests attending. For ‘The Great Outdoors’ I decided to do a camping based outfit. I was also challenging myself to create items from things already in my stash. Inspired by the canvas tent my family used when I was a child, I used medium weight cotton muslin and some orange lightweight canvas to make up Simplicity 8193 (a 1969 pattern).

My family’s tent was like this one, only orange and off-white.

To get the ‘tent’ vibe, I used an industrial looking vintage zipper as the front closure, double topstitched the horizontal seams and collar, and added twill tape peg loops to the hem.

The look was completed by this headpiece I built onto a headband using felt, wool yearn, clear shelf liner, a battery operated tea light, and some ikea carpet. The ‘fire pit’ lifts to access the tea light switch (velcro holds it down while in use). Sadly I didn’t have time to add marshmallows…
